This month, we will be talking about what it means to be an artist, what kinds of artworks people make, and using our imaginations to create art.

First Graders are learning about where artists get their ideas. After looking at painting "the Fair at Reynosa" by Carmen Lomas Garza, students decided that artists can be inspired from scenes of everyday life and memories. First Grade students are drawing their memories of a special place they've visited.

Second Grade students are learning all about the color wheel and color groups: Primary, Secondary, Warm, Cool, and Neutral colors. Then, they will investigate the work of painter Mark Rothko and how certain colors make us feel different emotions. Students will then create watercolor paintings inspired by Rothko, using specific color groups.

Third Grade investigated the work of Vincent Van Gogh and noticed that while his artworks are about many different subjects (portraits, landscapes, still-life, etc.) the common threads in his paintings are thick paint, bold brushstrokes and bright colors.

Focusing on the "Bedroom at Arles" painting, Third Graders are creating sketches of their bedrooms at home, which will be colored with oil pastels to get that texture that Van Gogh was so famous for. Students even learned some quick techniques to make a room look 3-dimensional!

Fourth Grade students will begin learning about memory and community through the artwork of Columbus artist, Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson. Students will create memory maps of places they remember, as well as collages using found objects depicting the concept of community.

This unit connects with the Fourth Grade's study of Ohio, since Aminah Robinson is an Ohio artist.

5th - 7th Grade and 10th Grade are working on their basic drawing skills by working from observation. Each student chose an object to draw from the art room and is in the process of creating 6 drawings: 1 "diagnostic" drawing, a line drawing, a blind contour drawing, a continuous line drawing, a negative space drawing, and a complete value drawing. The aim of these exercises is to improve students seeing skills.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to another exciting year at CTA!
